Much as we enjoyed the Regals that debuted the new turbo powerplants, we couldn't help but wonder how the mighty Buick turbo V-6 would feel in a modern, sophisticated car-a car with the taut handling and sleek aerodynamics to exploit the engine's heroic output fully. General Motors was apparently thinking the same thing, for now the Buick-turbo-engined Trans Am is a reality. This limited-production 20th Anniversary TA was also selected as the pace car for the 1989 Indianapolis 500, running completely stock except for adding the pace car light pack.

As iconic as Grand Nationals and GNXs have become, they have the downfall of being based on a more touring style chassis, which limits their performance potential past the mile mark, thus requiring them to be speed limited at 124 mph.

No such precautions are needed with the turbo Trans Am. Thanks to its performance-oriented platform, the turbo TA can run without a speed limiter. Thus freed, the turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 is able to push the Trans Am all the way up to 153 mph. At last: straight-line performance that delivers on the promise of both the Trans Am and the Buick V-6.
