The history of Express Werke AG, a German motorcycle company, reflects significant developments in the German motor industry from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Express Werke began as a bicycle manufacturer. Carl Marschütz founded the company in Neumarkt, Bavaria, in 1884, initially under the name "Goldschmidt & Pirzer" in partnership with Eduard Pirzner. Express Werke AG (AG=Aktiengesellschaft: a type of shareholder owned, publicly traded German corporation) had a 75-year history of producing bicycles, mopeds, and small-displacement motorcycles starting all the way back in 1884. Express Werke utilized engines produced by ILO and Sachs to power its lightweight scooters. From the 1940’s through 1959, when Express reportedly ended production, the company offered seven classes of bikes with cc displacements of 50, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250.
