Ford's 1957 Skyliner was the world's first powered retracting and folding hardtop convertible to be truly mass-produced by a car company from the factory. The retractable roof mechanism, marketed as the "Hide-Away Hardtop", was unique to Ford-branded products, and was not offered in their other line-up of cars. The car enjoyed a three year run, coming close to 50,000 sales.
The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner completed a complete frame-off rotisserie restoration in 2022 to a very high example. With the body removed, the frame was sandblasted, restored and received Por-15 paint. The brakes were completely re-furbished with a vacuum assist brake system enhancing the drum brakes all around. An electric vacuum pump was installed to provide the extra boost needed for braking. The Ford 9" rear end is original to the car and was refurbished. This Ford rides on steel wheels, two year old tires and 1957 Ford hubcaps providing that long, sleek stance these cars are known for.
Under the hood is a rebuilt, period correct 312 V-8 Engine. Topped with a Holly 4bbl Carburetor, the engine's performance is enhanced with a Racing cam that is very responsive to the accelerator. The engine has approximately 500 miles since the rebuild. The Automatic Transmission was rebuilt along with the engine providing for a smooth ride going down the road. The new exhaust system offers a great sound at idle and while cruising.
The body was given a Tuxedo Black (Ford Factory color from 2011-14) paint job that shows the excellent body work performed on the sheet metal. The paint scheme represents the owner's vision for the car. Bumpers were re-chromed and all stainless is present. All glass is good and the trunk received a complete trunk kit that is sure to impress. The retractable top worked on command with all top motors being rebuilt. With the top down, the fender skirts adds to the impressive look of this car.
The red interior was completely refurbished with new seats, carpet, door panels and headliner. The front bucket seats and center console are from a 1965 Galaxie XL and fit the car very well. the car benefited from a complete new wiring harness front to back and all gauges work. An after market stereo was installed and fits nicely with the very impressive dash presentation.
The car has been driven approximately 1000 miles since the rebuild and is an absolute pleasure to drive. It sails down the road, is responsive to the engine and transmission, tracks straight and brakes straight as well.
