1970 Ford Torino Cobra SCJ |
Concourse rotisserie restoration! It is VIN # matching and documented with original invoice and a Marti Report. Only 1,475 were made Looking through the receipts it's obvious this was a no expense spared restoration. Original components were sent out and rebuilt, it would have cost much less to just replace them. Many NOS parts were purchased. How about an NOS speedometer cable for $395 or radiator hoses for $505!
The Drag Pack SCJ: Ford's secret weapon! Ford certainly downplayed this option; it barely got a mention on page 18 of their brochure. It only referenced that it included a 3.91 Traction Lock rear for $155, but oh boy it was so much more. When a guy walked into the Ford dealer and ordered a 3.91 rear with a 4-speed, Ford knew exactly what that buyer's intentions were. So, with no questions asked you got the Super Cobra Jet. It included a much stronger built motor that could take a beating: 4 bolt mains, stronger block, forged pistons on stronger rods, a solid lifter aggressive cam, 780 cfm Holley carb, header type exhaust manifolds, an external oil cooler and more. Another secret is the true horsepower. Rated only 5 hp more than a Cobra Jet at 375 hp, it was actually over 425 hp!
EXTERIOR: What a good-looking car with its fastback design, a shaker hood and killer colors! Only 101 made in these colors. The body is rust free and laser beam straight, the doors shut like a new car. Repainted its original medium blue metallic, it's laid out evenly and polished to a glass finish. The matte finished blackout hood treatment adds great character. Sport mirrors and hood pins dress it up too. The glass is crystal clear and weatherstrips were replaced. The chrome is show quality and the stainless is polished. It was born with Magnum 500 wheels and is wearing them proudly. They are wrapped in reproduction Goodyear tires, F60-15s in front, G60-15s in back.
INTERIOR: Sharp looking blue interior in excellent shape. Down on the floor the carpet fits tight and the blue seatbelts were restored ($921). Door panels, headliner, visors look new. The seat is firm and reupholstered. The dash area is in excellent shape, the steering wheel was restored ($400) and it has an original Am-Fm radio. The rear shelf area is pristine.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Concourse restored engine compartment. The heart of it is it's VIN # matching Super Cobra Jet 429 ram air engine. The SCJ was very underrated at 375 hp, actual hp was over 425! They were built tougher than their little brother CJ and included an external oil cooler. This motor has been completely rebuilt. It has correct finned aluminum valve covers and complete ram air system. Its correctly dated smog system was concourse restored and bench tested ($479 pulley). NOS hoses, correct ""alligator"" radiator hose ($507). This one features optional power steering and brakes. The original brake booster was sent out and restored. They even paid $193 for the NOS master cylinder cap, gasket, and retainer clip. Original Fomoco radiator was recored, $1,075 correct numbered fan shroud in excellent shape which is very rare. $507 NOS battery hold down! The original wiper motor was restored. All the surfaces are smooth and neatly painted.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Under the trunk lid and the jamb are painted real slick. The inside is all clean metal, also painted blue. It has reproduction stickers, weatherstrip and trunk mat. It includes a 15 inch Magnum wheel with a Goodyear Polyglass tire for a spare and the jack assembly.
UNDERSIDE: It was flipped on a rotisserie, restored and detailed. Pristine floors that were painted red oxide primer with the right amount of blue overspray. All the suspension and steering front and back has been rebuilt and properly detailed. It came with the competition suspension and staggered rear shocks. The brake system was completely rebuilt, it has disc in front. The fuel system was completely restored. Right now, it does have a new custom exhaust system. Looking up at the motor it is spotless, has a concourse restored, dated starter ($689). VIN # matching, 4-speed close ratio trans. The original Hurst shifter was sent out and rebuilt. Original Drag Pack 3.91 traction lock rear end, the tag is still attached.
SERVICE: We inspected the car and all we had to do was fix the reverse lights, clean the headlight connection and replace a hood hinge.
I finally learned just what a 429 Super Cobra Jet was all about, and I have a strong appreciation for this car. It's actually a factory-built race car with very limited production. This one having its numbers matching, concourse restoration makes it very collectible.
