1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible |
This 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible is an absolutely stunning, well-sorted '58 Impala Convertible that was a beneficiary of an extensive, documented frame off restoration. Coming out of the highly successful 1957 model year, the excitement around the American auto industry began to temper a bit in 1958 due in part to an impending economic downturn. Nonetheless, America's automakers would continue to release some of the most iconic American automobiles in 1958, complete with groundbreaking technological improvements and seemingly timeless designs. For General Motors, the 1958 model year marked the 50th Anniversary for the automobile juggernaut with the company's marques releasing models or packages in celebrations of GM's Golden Anniversary celebration. Chevrolet's anniversary car was the Impala, which was essentially an option package for Chevrolet's top-of-the-line Bel Air, which made the Impala the highest trim-level vehicle in Chevrolet's 1958 lineup. Notably, it wasn't until the following year in 1959 when the Impala became its own standalone model. While the debut of the '58 Impala was noteworthy in its own right, Chevrolet actually had completely redesigned all of its entire passenger cars, from the entry-level Del Ray to its brand-new top-of-the-line Impala. The GM marque touted in its 1958 marketing materials that the new-look Chevys were "lower, wider, longer" however, from nearly every angle, the new '58 Chevys looked nothing like their predecessors. Up front, one of the most identifiable changes was a shift from large single headlight in each quarter to a dual-headlight design consisting of two smaller headlights instead, which was made possible by a change in government regulation and seen across most American cars and trucks in 1958. Moreover, the 1958 Chevrolets also were outfitted with new-look grilles and refreshed bumper design leading to a more modern looking front end. The sides of the '58 Chevys also received a facelift sporting a more contemporary silhouette. On the top-trim Impala, special chrome trim and Impala-identifying marks, such as the four new Chevrons placed on the front fenders, served as signals that Impala was in fact Chevrolet's top-of-the-line model. Without a doubt, it was the completely redesigned rear end of the 1958 Chevys that received the most drastic style updates and cemented the '58 as one of the most iconic American-made automobiles of all time. "Missile" style taillights were framed by the swooping lines of the iconic gullwing-like rear quarters that replaced the '57's tailfin design. The Impala, of course, was further differentiated in the rear from the Del Ray, Biscayne, and standard Bel Air, as the Impala sported three taillights on each side whereas the others were equipped with a pair on each side. In addition, the 1958 Impalas also sported simulated air scoops on the rear fenders that further differentiated the Impala from the lower trim level cars. The interiors were also well-appointed and were known to be the plushest and most luxurious Chevrolets ever produced. This particular example is a Late Great Chevys Club Gold Award Winner and comes to us from the hands of a meticulous and loving caretaker who owned the car for the past 20 years. Powering this '58 Impala is a 348 Cubic Inch V8 fed by Tri-Power 3 dual-barrel carburetor setup. Exhaust exits the big block Chevy powerplant via dual exhaust setup that generates a terrific throaty sound out the rear tailpipes. The 348 Tri-Power V8 is backed by a Powerglide Automatic Transmission that makes this classic Chevrolet an absolute joy to drive. In addition to the automatic transmission, this 1958 Chevrolet comes outfitted with numerous desirable options! With power steering, maneuvering this 3,500+ pound cruiser in and out of a tight space at the local car show or drive-in is a total breeze and the overall driving experience is much improved. Power front disc brakes is another wonderful addition to this 1958 Impala Convertible since they greatly improve the car's stopping power, especially with all that horsepower under the hood. This '58 Impala rides on a set of wide whitewall radial tires mounted on steel wheels and accented with spinner chrome hubcaps that give this Convertible a great look and even better ride. A spare tire is also enclosed in the rear mounted Continental Kit that further adds to the fantastic 50s look of this iconic Chevrolet. The white vinyl power convertible top is in excellent condition and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch. The chrome and brightwork around the exterior of this '58 Chevy Impala is absolutely gorgeous and is among the best we've ever seen. The exterior has been correctly refinished in beautiful Tropic Turquoise paint that completes the exterior appearance of the car. The interior of this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible is drop-dead gorgeous! The front and rear bench seats have been correctly reupholstered in Turquoise vinyl with tri-tone Gray, Black, and Turquoise cloth inserts. The color-matched door panels, carpet, dash, and steering wheel all retain a nice stock appearance and show wonderfully. All four windows operate as they should, going up and down with the flick of a switch. The dash is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with a clock, locking glovebox, and push-button Wonderbar AM radio. Whether you're looking to add an exceptional '58 Chevy to your existing collection or you're buying your very first classic car, this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible would make an excellent choice.
